Mauritius Weather

Mauritius is located in the tropics in the southern hemisphere and has year-round great weather and two distinct seasons, summer and winter.

Summer: November to April
Peak summer temperatures on the coast can exceed 30°C and there is a greater chance of rain. Rainfall is characterised by short sharp showers usually occurring in the late afternoons. These rain showers can be a welcome relief from the afternoon sun. During the hottest months of January and February the island can experience cyclones, but these are relatively rare. As the UK experiences winter at this time, Mauritius is a great place to escape for some winter sun. Snorkelling and scuba diving are excellent at this time as the warm waters of the Indian Ocean attracts an abundance of marine life.

Winter: May to October
During mid-winter, Mauritius is cooler with temperatures in the mid to low 20s (°C). July and August are popular for families as this coincides with the UK school holidays. The sheltered northern and western coasts are better where temperatures remain the highest. The trade winds that blow make this an ideal time for sailing and wind surfing. September to October is when rainfall is at its lowest and it is also less humid at this time and temperatures start to pick up. This is a great time for those wishing to get married in Mauritius, as you won’t be sweltering in your dress or suit.

Mauritius Weather Review
When is the best time to visit Mauritius? Whilst Mauritius is a year-round destination, there are also two great periods when we think it is the best time to travel to the island.

Mid-March to end of May and Mid September to beginning of December
Mauritius does not have a spring and autumn, but travelling to the island during these two periods you’ll experience the best of both summer and winter. Temperatures are not too hot and humid and it’s still warm in the evenings. Rainfall is low and if you do catch a shower, it does not tend to last long. October and November is also a time when Jacaranda and Flamboyant trees brings striking colour to the countryside making this one of the best times to visit Mauritius.
